Dear Associate,

Just outside of my home office window the late summer flowers are blooming, runners are passing by and best of all, there are children walking to school. My children. This week marked the beginning of another school year, and now (thank goodness) the tranquility of my workspace has returned.

As many of you with children know, the days just before school starts can be hectic. We gathered pens, pencils, binders and books. We tried to interpret the mind of our seven-year-old daughter who insisted that new school clothes must not include “shirts with little girl printing.” And getting the junior and high school kids registered with the multiple locker, yearbook, parking, activity, library, PE and science lab fees left my wallet a little lighter.

As I sit here and enjoy the silence I'm grateful for all the teachers who will replace their summer serenity for classroom chaos. Thank you for your efforts, and I'll see you at back-to-school night.

Regards,
Don Sorensen

1 > Kids face tough ethical questions
Dallas Morning News (subscription) - TX,USA
...And what about cheating on homework or a test? "I try to explain cheating as a fairness issue," says Mr. Lusk. "What if I studied all night and worked very hard, but the cheater didn't and got a good grade? That's not fair." Talk about how it might feel if a cheater gets a better grade than you did....
2 > The politics of cheating
McCook Daily Gazette - McCook,Nebraska,USA
...What if you work for an employer who has as one criteria for pay increases and promotions your level of education? We know when people find it in their best economic interests to cheat, they often will. What if you're looking to change jobs and the kind of job you want requires a degree or a particular kind of degree? The options are pretty clear. You can do it yourself or you can hire someone else to do it for you. Many people today are choosing to do the latter rather than the former....
3 > Tricks to Getting Around SATs
Korea Times - South Korea
...On the other hand, getting away with looking at another student's test is a much simpler matter for the students. "It really is almost too easy to cheat. You sit in rows, and the grid answer sheet of the student sitting in front of you is clearly visible from behind," said a high school student who wished to remain anonymous. "Of course we should not be looking at another student's test, but one peek can easily turn into several."
4 > De La Salle confronts cheating by students
In survey, students admit it's widespread
Times Picayune - New Orleans,LA,USA
...Thanks to a recent confidential survey of De La Salle seniors by a team of public relations students from Loyola University, the Catholic high school in Uptown New Orleans is taking a harder look at cheating in all its forms, which range from traditional means, such as sneaking notes into an exam room, to cribbing term papers off the Internet. The survey, which was taken during the spring semester found that 84 percent of roughly 80 seniors polled -- about half the class -- said they had engaged in academically dishonest acts -- 14 percent frequently....
5 > Tempted by technology
York Daily Record - York,PA,USA
...Lee Rainie, director of the Pew Internet & American Life Project, said the increase in perception of cheating could be linked to the subject attracting the attention of media and school officials. He anticipated that the percentage will grow in the following years because more cases of cheating will occur -- even some extreme cases that will gain public attention. Copycat effect...
6 > Schools try to draw the line for wired kids
Houston Chronicle - United States
...Tucked away in pockets or camouflaged behind backpacks, hidden fingers could be typing text messages, surfing the Web or even taking pictures. In today's era of tiny, high-tech devices, it's a constant struggle to make sure hands are kept in plain sight, he said. "The reality of the situation is that the genie is out of the bottle on cell phones. Whether we say 'yes' or 'no' on them, they're going to carry them," said Dewey, a Carnegie Vanguard High School teacher....
