Dear Associate,
This week's stories lean toward technology and teachers. The No Child Left Behind law has increased pressure to perform on state exams, causing some teachers to cross the line by helping their students increase scores.
On a lighter note, story #7 "Bamboozled with Technology" is slim on educational cheating but fascinating in reference to recent cheating and voting controversies on the TV shows American Idol and Super Millionaire.
Here at Caveon we're pleased to announce that three of our founders have been appointed to key industry positions within the Association of Test Publishers (ATP) and the National Council on Measurement in Education (NCME). Press release
Regards,
Don Sorensen

1 > One Poor Test Result: Cheating Teachers
L.A. Times - 5/21/04
Since a statewide testing program began five years ago, more than 200 California teachers have been investigated for allegedly helping students on state exams, and at least 75 of those cases have been proved, according to documents obtained by The Times.
2 > A Detrimental Equation for Cheating
Certification Magazine - June 2004
There are two less obvious explanations why individuals cheat on tests: perceived test value, or how an individual values the test; and competing objectives, or what's at stake for the individual with poor test performance. The combination of these two factors creates a detrimental equation for extensive cheating.
3 > SAT Improvement Triggers Devastating Accusation
Virginian Pilot - Norfolk,VA,USA
Martin, a senior, retook the test in November. This time, she thought she nailed it - the reading comprehension, the analogies, everything. "I came home, and I was like, 'I think I did really awesome.'" Martin did improve - a lot. Her score shot up to 1230, a 380-point bounce.
4 > State Uncovers Cheating on WASL
Seattle Post Intelligencer - Seattle,WA,USA
The state school superintendent's office has investigated nearly two dozen reports this year of improperly administered standardized tests at public schools across Washington.
5 > Reseda School Puts Character Above Scores
L.A. Times - Los Angeles,CA,USA
Before state tests are held, Wiener holds assemblies to tell students how important the exams are to the school's reputation and to warn them not to cheat. "It's not worth it to look at someone else's paper or ask for answers," Wiener said he tells students. "The consequences are too great."
6 > Students Invent New Ways to Cheat Examiners
Arab News - Saudi Arabia
If students put one tenth of the ingenuity they expend on cheating into studying for exams, they would all pass with flying colors. Is there something about cheating that is inherently more attractive than studying, regardless of the effort involved?
7> Bamboozled with Technology
PC Magazine - USA
But if test organizers allowed people to bring these devices, would everyone cheat? Or would it just be those who would have looked for a way to beat the system anyway? If American Idol and Super Millionaire are any measure of the potential problems we face, we'd best avoid temptation and leave all those devices safely stored in another room while we try to figure out the answer to "Explain the Pythagorean theorem."
