Dear Associate,
Remember last time when I wrote about searching the Web for test content? One site I didn't mention was eBay. You may ask, "Test items for sale on eBay?" My answer, a definite "Yes." In fact, there's an interesting article this week about this very topic.
|
An examinee that failed the 2002 American Board of Surgery exam, was permitted to review his test, (as was the practice at the time) for a period of time. During that time he said, "I was able to take notes very quickly and wrote down about 100 questions with the correct answers."
Soon after that, 86 questions from the exam were listed for sale on eBay with the following description: "These are the actual certifying general surgery board questions with correct answers, guaranteed to improve your test score… Why take the chance at failing, getting a year behind your peers...? Get an advantage now!"
The case was settled last month and the test thief agreed to pay $36,000, the estimated cost of creating and testing new test items.

Test Security Tip
By Cyndy Fitzgerald, Senior Test Security Director, Caveon
There are three key areas that you should be tracking, if your program uses computer based testing. They are test scores, data forensics, and response latency. The first two also apply to paper-n-pencil tests. First and foremost, it’s essential that you monitor any changes in test scores over time. You can choose to either track the scaled test score or you may want to simply monitor pass rates in the case of licensure and certification testing. I recommend the development and review of a report that includes an analysis of scores over time. You can look at the overall test performance across geographies as well as countries and test sites, in the case of licensure and certification; and school districts, schools and test administrators in the case of education. You may also want to consider conducting a retake analysis to determine if there are any extreme changes in test performance by examinees over time.
