Dear Associate,

Last week 8.67 million Chinese students took part in the "largest-scale" college entrance exam in the world. Only one-in-four will get a college spot so students do everything they can to maximize their chances of success. The pressure surrounding the exam has turned cheating into an underground industry.

Police around China recently cracked 28 cases in which suspects advertised text message exam answers for sale. You might remember that last year 3,100 students across the country received punishment for some violation of test policy and 110 exam staff workers were also punished for helping the cheaters, with 11 of them receiving prison sentences.
Speaking of large-scale, next week I'll be attending the National Conference on Large-scale Assessment in San Antonio, Texas. As always, I'll be sure to take lots of pictures. In my next e-mail I'll have a link to view the photos.
Regards,
Don Sorensen

Test Security Tip

By Cyndy Fitzgerald, Senior Test Security Director, Caveon

There are three key areas that you should be tracking, if your program uses computer based testing. They are test scores, data forensics, and response latency. The first two also apply to paper-n-pencil tests. First and foremost, it’s essential that you monitor any changes in test scores over time. You can choose to either track the scaled test score or you may want to simply monitor pass rates in the case of licensure and certification testing. I recommend the development and review of a report that includes an analysis of scores over time. You can look at the overall test performance across geographies as well as countries and test sites, in the case of licensure and certification; and school districts, schools and test administrators in the case of education. You may also want to consider conducting a retake analysis to determine if there are any extreme changes in test performance by examinees over time.
