| Dear Associate, |
In a recent opinion piece in The Christian Science Monitor, David Callahan author of The Cheating Culture writes, “Students may be cynical about what it takes to succeed these days, but they do care about fairness. And cheating is nothing if not unfair. Cheaters get rewards they don't deserve, like scholarships, admission to college or grad school, internships, and jobs. Cheating is the antithesis of equal opportunity - the notion that we all should have a fair shot at success and that the people who get rewarded are the people who deserve those rewards because they worked the hardest.”
I like David’s thoughts; cheating really is the “antithesis of equal opportunity.” I applaud his efforts to bring the battle home. Too often students don’t realize that whether they cheat or not, cheating has an effect on them – and it’s always bad.
If you’re involved with state assessments I’d like to invite you to respond to an online survey we’re conducting on state education test security. We’ll be presenting the results of the survey at next month’s National Conference on Large-Scale Assessment in San Francisco. Click here to take the survey.
