Dear Associate,

There has been cheating as long as examinations have existed. Case in point; recently 40 miniature cheating books for the Qing Dynasty imperial examination system were revealed. These books along with other items used for cheating are on display at the Shanghai Museum in China. One of the most interesting pieces is a cotton jacket used for cheating during exams covered with inked text from Confucian Classics (see photo). The jacket contains 353 model essays of 200,000 characters.

At the recent ATP conference Caveon conducted an informal Test Security Survey. The results were very similar to our survey results from the NOCA conference. It’s obvious that test security is an ongoing and growing problem.

Highlights of the responses included:

  • 75% spend more time now then five years ago on security issues
  • 70% have not had security audits in the last 18 months
  • 35% do not have security plans in place
  • 50% monitor the web for disclosure of their test questions
One of the best ways to take control of your test security is to clearly know what your program is doing right, and what areas could use improvement. If your program is one of the many that have not had a recent Security Audit please contact me and we’ll send a proposal right away.

Best regards,
Don Sorensen
